Community-Based Disaster Risk Management and the role of Media

Media plays an effective role in shifting paradigm of disaster management culture as well as a advocating for the adaptation of climate change in Bangladesh. There is a range of actors within Bangladesh’s disaster management community, including government agencies, UN agencies, other development partners, NGOs, civil society institutions and media (both electronic and print). Media is one of the major actors, which contribute towards disaster preparedness and management. Bangladesh has made significant progress in shifting the focus from relief centric approach to Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). The issue of climate change has received greater attention in past several years in Bangladesh. Media plays an effective role in shifting paradigm of disaster management culture as well as a advocating for the adaptation of climate change in Bangladesh. This analysis substantiates a widespread knowledge management effort of Disaster Response Facility (DRF), which will contribute towards the research and analysis of policy issues for better disaster preparedness and response considering the utmost impact of climate change in Bangladesh in future. This initiative will help different stakeholders, even policy makers to know the role of media in disaster risk reduction and climate change issues. Apart from that, it will help to manage and disseminate knowledge among the disaster management community in Bangladesh. The study will also help the media professional to identify problems and to establish objectives depending on targeted people in the community for rising people’s awareness, making co- ordination among key stakeholders associated with relief, rehabilitation and recovery by strengthening the existing mechanisms and improved use of communication techniques.
